  Scar

A Scar is a mark remaining on the skin after a wound has healed. The natural healing process of the body causes any open wound to be closed or in other words filled with rapidly generating scar tissue replacing normal skin tissue. Scars help the body to protect itself from infection through this natural process of generating Scar Tissue. As we all know the Scar that is left after a wound has healed can often vary in the size and type of Scarring. Scars are unpredictable because there are many variables affecting the severity of Scarring. Consider the following factors that affect the size and type of Scar that can remain after an injury:

  • blood supply to the wounded area
  • size of the wound
  • depth of the wound
  • thickness of the skin

Based on a variety of factors some Scars will become less noticeable with time, while other Scars will actually grow in size.
