The CDC and ACIP have issued new flu vaccine recommendations for the 2004-2005 flu season because of the limited supply of flu shots this year caused by the withdrawal of Chiron Corporation's Fluvirin flu vaccine. Based on whether your child is or is not in one of the high risk or priority groups under the new recommendations, you will more than likely have to look to an alternative vaccination. The new recommendations do say that healthy individuals who are ages 5-49 years and not pregnant. The recommendation includes health-care workers except those who care for patients in special care units and persons caring for children ages 6 months or less should be encouraged to be vaccinated with Flumist.
Even without the shortage, there are other problems that can occur causing the alternatives to the flu shot to be the only option. See the following list of alternative immunizations.
- Flumist (nasal spray flu vaccine which is still in good supply)
- Antiviral drugs – amantadine (Symmetrel); rimantadine (Flumadine); oseltamivir (Tamiflu)
- Finally, take precautions to avoid people who are sick with the flu
